JAMB Became Irrelevant When Universities Started Conducting Post UME Exams – Prof. Awosika

The Rector of Olawoye Awosika School of Innovative Studies, Prof Abiola Awosika has welcomed the scrapping of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB), saying that it became irrelevant ever since universities started conducting their examinations after UME exams.

Speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast Show Sunrise Daily, the Professor decried the need for students to sit for series of examinations to get admission into university saying that “we have so many stumbling blocks placed in front of the students instead of making access to university education broader we are limiting it by having them take different examinations before they can get admission”.

Prof Awosika however disagreed with calls that the nation’s admission system to be overhauled from what obtains presently whereby only 40 per cent of admission is based on merit while the others are on catchment and applicants from educationally less  developed states. She notes that such system is also in existence in the United States and that the right structure to aptly implement such policy is what Nigeria needs and not a total overhaul.

She advised Nigeria’s leading universities to take their programmes online to target people who are professionals and have WAEC but have not been able to get into a university. This set of people won’t have need to sit for entrance exams into the university because the online programmes will adequately address their needs
