Keep your contact lenses clean or have
your eyeballs eaten — your call.
An 18-year-old senior high student from
Pembroke Pines, Fla., nearly lost her sight thanks to a revolting parasite that
had been living in her contact lens. When Ashley Hyde presented with redness
and throbbing in one eye, doctors were initially baffled as to what was causing
it. After several painful-sounding eye scrapes and drilling into her eye, they
discovered an infestation of a microscopic parasite. Turns out the acanthamoeba were
actually gobbling up her cornea and you really need those for seeing stuff.
Luckily, Ashley still has her sight and has urged anyone using contacts to
keep a close eye on them.
