The President should offer Amnesty to Boko Haram members who embrace the path of peace and want to be reformed.
The Northern Traditional Rulers Council and the is insisting that the President Goodluck Jonathan should still offer amnesty to members of the sect, who are willing to embrace peace and reintegration into the larger society in the wake of the Islamic terror group, Boko Haram's leader rejecting the plan.
The council members who were shocked by boko Haram leader, Imam Abubakar Shekau's rejection of Amnesty arrangement, called for decisive action from the federal government to curb the “unfortunate escalation of insecurity in the Country.”
Council members were worried that the Amnesty rejection by boko Haram might leave the President with no option than the continuation of the military exercise.
“The meeting calls on the Federal Government to consider dialogue as the better option in resolving the crises. To this end, the federal government is called upon to reconsider its stand and offer Amnesty to Boko Haram members who embrace the path of peace, reformation and reintegration with the larger society as it is the norm the world over.”
The meeting was held at the palace of the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar III.
