After months of repair work, finally the
Statue of Liberty has officially reopened
once again to the public just in time for the July 4th holiday.
The
Statue of Liberty Island was closed following the Super Sandy storm, while the
statue was not damaged; the island had major flooding and infrastructure
damage.
Mayor
Michael Bloomberg and other federal officials were scheduled to officially
reopen Liberty Island. A large crowd gathered for the holiday and
ribbon-cutting ceremony at Liberty Island.
The statue was spared in the fall storm, but Lady Liberty's
island took a serious beating. Railings broke, docks and paving stones were
torn up and buildings were flooded.
The
Liberty Island and Ellis Island cost an estimated $59 million.
Ellis Island remains closed
and still needs repairs.
